The book cover of “The Girls of Fire and Thorns” gives off a mysterious, mystical, and adventurous atmosphere. This aura is due because of the design and content of the book cover.
To begin, the front cover has three main backgrounds: the forest, the desert, and the night sky. This background shows basically the journey that the main character takes in the story. This background basically gives off the adventurous aura. It shows the journey the main character had to go through. But together these backgrounds also create a kind of a fairy tale and mystical aura, especially because of the stars that are popping in different part of the cover and the combination of backgrounds also create kind of like a misty look. In addition, forests are dark and realty closed up most of the time so that so that creates a mysterious scene. Also how the face of the main character is half hidden that also gives off some secrecy, so in general most of the things in the cover will give of a mysterious atmosphere because the audience wouldn't really know most of the things that are going on.
Now moving on to the stone, it is not really specified what type of stone it is, so the color of the stone is what is going to be explain because colors and stones have meanings. Based on my research on that “Blue is the coolest color - the color of the sky, ocean, sleep, twilight. The ancient Egyptians used lapis lazuli to represent heaven. Blue symbolizes the Virgin Mary. A pure blue is the color of inspiration, sincerity and spirituality. Blue is often the chosen color by conservative people. Blue is the calming color. Dark blue is the color of truth and moderation.”(“Color Blue Meaning”). It is really interesting that all those things that were described have an actual part in the story. That reference to heaven and the Virgin Mary kind of revolves around God, who is a big part in the story especially for the main character. Talking about the main Character, it is interesting how those other description of the color blue, like sincerity, conservative, calm, and moderation, are things that describe the main character. As seen in the cover she is actually inside the stone, which might be showing how she represent those qualities and God, because based on the story she is the chosen one.
As for the audience, there is actually more than just teen girls. Of course, one of the main audiences is girls because most of us are attracted to mystical things in some kind of way. Having the main character also proves a targeted audience which is girls or women. In a way many girls could relate to this book, especially because of how the main character feels, which is express on the back cover: “She is done being useless. Better to Fight – Perhaps die– Than to stand idly by. Her friends won’t hesitate. Neither will her enemies. She is the Chosen one, and her time has come.”(“The Girl of Fire and Thorns”). I think many girls can relate to this because we are many times considered weak, so we do try to prove ourselves worthy. We like to feel special.
There are also other audiences like fans. This is actually Rae Carson’s first book, so I don’t mean her fans. I mean other authors fans. On the back cover of the book there are three authors who give feedback about the books; those are Veronica Roth (Divergent), Paolo Bacigalupi (Ship Breaker), and Cinda Williams Chima (The Exile Queen). If those fans saw the commentary they might give the books a try.
Now as for the simple audience, they could be basically anyone. People who like to read and enjoy reading anything from time to time, people who enjoy love stories, adventure stories, mystical stories, and war stories. There are many factors that could specify an audience, but the main ones are the ones that where mentioned before.
